Rituals and Practices

A. Istilam means to place one’s face between both hands and kiss the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad). If due to crowding it’s not possible to kiss it directly, then one may touch it with the hand or with a stick and kiss the hand or point towards it and then kiss the hands — this gesture is also called Istilam. It is narrated from Hazrat Zubair ibn Umar that a man once asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (RA) about kissing the Black Stone, to which he replied: "I have seen the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) doing Istilam and kissing it."

A. Raml refers to walking briskly with short, quick steps and slightly shaking the shoulders during the first three rounds of Tawaf, imitating the style of strong and brave individuals. It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir (RA) that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed Tawaf of the Kaaba, he would do Raml in the first three circuits, and then walk normally in the remaining four.

A. Iztibaa is the act of placing the upper sheet (chadar) of Ihram under the right arm and over the left shoulder in such a way that the right shoulder remains uncovered. This is done before starting Tawaf. It is narrated from Hazrat Ya’la (RA) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed Tawaf in the state of Iztibaa, and he had a cloth over him during this act. After doing Iztibaa, one should face the Kaaba and proceed towards the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) from the right side until one is directly in front of it. Then the person makes the intention (niyyah) for Tawaf.

A. Nafl Tawaf is the optional (voluntary) Tawaf that any sane person can perform during their stay in Makkah, without being bound by specific timings. It can be done once or multiple times, at any time. In Nafl Tawaf, Ramal (walking briskly in the first three rounds) and Ittiba (placing the upper garment under the right arm and over the left shoulder) are not required, and there is no condition of wearing Ihram. For an Afaqi (a traveler from outside the Meeqat), performing Nafl Tawaf is more virtuous than offering Nafl Salah (optional prayer). However, for the residents of Makkah, offering Salah is considered more virtuous than performing Tawaf — but this ruling is specifically for the Hajj season, to avoid crowding and to make space for the Afaqis. Otherwise, Nafl Tawaf is considered better.

A. Tawaf-e-Wida (also called Tawaf-e-Sadr) is the farewell Tawaf performed at the time of leaving the House of Allah (Baitullah). In this Tawaf, there is no Raml, no Sa’i, and no Iztiba. It is wajib (obligatory) for those coming from outside the Meeqat boundaries (i.e., Aafaqi).

A. Tawaf-e-Ziyarah is a fundamental pillar (Rukn) of Hajj. Since it is performed after Qurbani (sacrifice), Halq (shaving the head) or Taqsir (trimming the hair), and after removing the Ihram to wear regular clothes, the act of Iztiba (uncovering the right shoulder) is not observed in this Tawaf. This Tawaf can be performed any time from the morning of 10th Dhul-Hijjah (after Subh Sadiq) until sunset on the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah. However, performing it on the 10th is considered best. After completing Tawaf-e-Ziyarah, all restrictions of Ihram come to an end.

A. Tawaf-e-Qudoom is the first circumambulation (Tawaf) performed upon entering Makkah Mukarramah. This Tawaf is Sunnah (recommended) for every Afaqi (a person coming from outside the Miqat boundaries) who enters Makkah with the intention of performing Hajj-e-Ifrad or Hajj-e-Qiran.

A. Tawaf is the act of circling around the Holy Kaaba in Masjid al-Haram in a specific manner. The area where this circling is performed is called Mataf. Tawaf begins at the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad) and ends at the same point.

A. Talbiyah is a specific invocation recited during Hajj and Umrah while in the state of Ihram. The words of Talbiyah are: لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ Translation: "O Allah! I am present, I am present. You have no partner, I am present. Indeed, all praise, blessings, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner." It is obligatory to say the Talbiyah at least once with the tongue when entering into Ihram. Along with this, making the intention (niyyah) is also a condition. The words of intention are: اللّهُمَّ إنّي أُريدُ الْحَجَّ أو أُريدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهُ لِي وَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنِّي Translation: "O Allah! I intend to perform Hajj or Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me."

A. Hajj ya Umrah ki baqaida niyyat karke jo libaas pehna jata hai use Ihram kehte hain. Uske baghair aadmi Meeqat se nahi guzar sakta, yani ek chadar (nayi ya dhuli hui) odhne ke liye aur aisa hi ek tahband kamar par lapetne ke liye. Iske pehne ke baad baaz halal cheezein bhi haram ho jati hain.

A. Ihram for Men are two pieces of white cloth unstitched one to cover the lower body and one for the upper body and slippers Ihram for Women is not specific. They should cover their head/hair, where loose clothes, preferable where socks to cover feet

A. There are Four main steps of Umrah namely Ihram, Tawaf, Saiee and Halaq / Qasr

A. Steps for Umrah * Ihram - Intention to perform Umrah * Tawaf around the Holy Kaaba * Sai'I - Seven rounds between mount Safa and Mawrah in worship * Cut hair - Men must trim or shave their hair, women must trim their hair (cut the tip)
