Brief History of Hajj
Performing Hajj is a mandatory affair for Muslims who are financially and physically stable enough. But very few know the fact that Hajj dates back to 2000 BC when Prophet Ibrahim on Allah's command had to undergo the sacred pilgrimage of Hajj. At that point, Prophet Ibrahim left his only son Prophet Ismail along with His wife Hazrat Hajra in the middle of the desert. Due to the scarcity of food and water, Hazrat Hajra along with her son Prophet Ismail had to roam around the desert and made to walk between the mountains of Safa and Marwa which led to the miracle of Zamzam water in the middle of the desert. A few years later, Prophet Ibrahim returned to Makkah in the company of His son. He saw a dream in which Allah commanded Him to sacrifice His only son.
Both Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail willingly agreed to do the sacrifice and went to the mountain for the extreme act. By looking at the sheer faith of Prophet Ibrahim in Allah, the Almighty replaced a sheep in place of Prophet Ismail which led to the celebration of Hajj-Eid-ul-Adha.
A few years later, Allah again commanded Prophet Ibrahim to construct the Holy Kaaba alongside the Prophet Ismail and after completing the same asked people to perform Hajj around the place. From that time onwards, people perform Hajj every single year to experience their closeness towards the Almighty.
Tamattu: Hajj-ul-Tamattu is one of the types of Hajj that pilgrims from all across the world perform every single year. It is the type of Hajj in which the pilgrim is supposed to do the Umrah first before performing Hajj. One of the obligations of this type of Hajj is entering into the new state of Ihram for performing Hajj. It implies that Muslim pilgrims first enter the state of Ihram to perform the sacred act of Umrah. And once that is done, then the pilgrim needs to re-enter fresh into the state of Ihram for Hajj. Specifically, Hajj must be performed on the 8th of Dhul-Hiijah.
Ifraad: This type of Hajj better referred to as Hajj-ul-Ifrad must be performed by the residents of Jeddah, Haram, and Miqat. In this particular Hajj, pilgrims have to enter into the state of Ihram, and no such major obligation to do the Umrah first. In case, a person already performed Umrah first and then went to perform Hajj, then first he has to throw stones at Jamrat on the day of Eid.
Qiran: Hajj-ul-Qiran is meant for Muslims who live far away from the sacred mosque of Masjid Al Haram. This type of Hajj allows the pilgrims to perform the sacred acts of Hajj and Umrah in a single visit itself to the state of Ihram. Under this type, Muslims can perform Umrah first and the Hajj in the same state of Ihram without changing the same. Pilgrims can perform Umrah in the Islamic months of Shawwal and Dhul-Qa'dah and Hajj during the first 8 days.
