Hajj is a sacred pilgrimage that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their lifetime if they are physically and financially able. However, not all pilgrims perform Hajj in the same way. There are three distinct types of Hajj Ifrad, Qiran, and Tamattu. Each type has its own rules and requirements, allowing flexibility for pilgrims based on their circumstances. Understanding these differences can help you choose the best way to fulfill this profound spiritual journey.
Hajj Ifrad is performed exclusively by residents of Makkah or those living within the Meeqat boundaries. This type of Hajj involves performing only the rituals of Hajj without combining it with Umrah. Pilgrims choosing Ifrad enter the state of Ihram with the intention of performing Hajj alone and do not perform Umrah beforehand.
Hajj Qiran is when a pilgrim combines both Hajj and Umrah into a single journey without leaving the state of Ihram. Pilgrims intending Qiran enter Ihram with the intention of performing both acts of worship simultaneously.
Hajj Tamattu is the most commonly performed type of Hajj by international pilgrims. In this type, the pilgrim performs Umrah first, exits Ihram, and then re-enters Ihram to perform Hajj during the designated days.
For those traveling from abroad, Hajj Tamattu is the preferred choice as it offers flexibility and a less demanding schedule. Many travel agencies offer Hajj packages tailored to each type of Hajj, assuring pilgrims have the guidance and support they need. Staying at a hotel near Masjid Al Haram can also improve the experience by providing easy access to the sacred sites and reducing travel fatigue.
